" Most songs I hear today are over-produced. It's all the same. It could be a Top 10 hit or a dog food commercial. I can't tell." (Frank Black - MTV News.)

4/2/2003 | The News is Now Newsworthy! | | Helllooooo!!!
After many centuries of dormancy, the FB.net News Section has been revamped!
There won't be anything obviously different on your end, but the content is now being thrusted at you from a SQL instead of being text driven. As well, the 'Submit' page now pops all entries (i think we've had like three) into the SQL and sends a note to Jim and me, where we rush to our magical News Update Approval page and hit the big DENIED!! button. (Make sure you say 'DENIED' in the Strongbad voice.)
Just kidding! If you send something worth noting, we'll post it here. So get to it. =) | | 4/3/2003 | New Album Title? | |

this is whats posted on the cooking vinyl talkback page (franks uk distributor):
The New FB release is called'Show Me your Tears' and at the moment is due for release 8th September 2003. If we hear anything about any tour in the UK or Europe rest assured it will be straight on this page & in the tours section of the site. Thanks!! | | 4/4/2003 | FB&TC to appear on MuchMusic's "The Wedge" | Jim (13:17 PST) | Sean from Sonic Unyon, FB&TC's Canadian label, graces us with the following news:
"This one is for Canadian Frank Black fans or those of you with friends in Canada:
Make sure to tune into April 18th's edition of The Wedge on MuchMusic. The entire show is hosted by Frank Black and the Catholics. The band will play some of their favourite videos on the show along with some classic Pixies and Frank Black videos.
The program was filmed in October when the band did their five night stand in Toronto at the Horseshoe Tavern. The videos they picked are pretty interesting, I can't remember the whole list anymore, but there are definitely some surprises included in the show.
The Wedge airs Friday night at 11:00 PM EST on Much Music and repeats at midnight on Much Loud and at 3:00 AM EST on Much Music"
Set your TiVo's and VCR's! | | 4/5/2003 | Download FB&TC from HearItAgain.net | Jim (13:55 PST) | A brand new internet site, HearItAgain.net, offers live music for download for a small price. Here's a little blurb from their site:
"Welcome to HearItAgain.net. HearItAgain.net offers high quality, unedited recordings of various concerts from throughout the world. Downloads are generally available no later than two days after each show.
HearItAgain.net was created by fans for fans so concert goers can literally "Take The Concert Home".
Lucky for us, the first concert they've made available is the Frank Black & The Catholics at the Double Door in Chicago (3/28/03). For $11.95 (US), you can download 24 of the 26 songs from the show. Is it worth it? There are a couple free samples from the show available as a free download. You be the judge! | | 4/6/2003 | Happy Birthday Charles! | Jim (17:00 PST) | Thirty-eight years ago, the man for whom this site exists was born. For the past 17 years, he's created some of the greatest music rock and roll has seen in its history. For this we thank you, and wish you many years of more excellent music to come. Pixies Tab | | Hey there pilgrim, we've got some Pixies guitar tab on the site, thanks to NimrodsSon.
Now you can play along with Bossanova and Doolittle while surfing FB.net! | | 4/7/2003 | Date on the New Album | | As you probably already know, the album is scheduled to be titled "Show Me Your Tears".
Sarah from Spinart confirmed the date of September as the release, but FrequencyOfGlow sent us this as well:
"Met Frank in Chicago. He told me himself that the new album on SpinArt wil hit the stores in September of 2003."
There ya have it!
Oh yeah..i put up a pretty new front page for the site too. | | 4/8/2003 | CD FOUND: | | Found! Thanks to everyone that offered theirs.
Hey everyone,

3. Humboldt County Massacre
4. Changing Of The Guards (b.dylan)
Please contact me if you can send me a copy, i'll trade you something worthwhile in return.
Thanks! | | 4/9/2003 | Birthdays, lies, and the internet | Jim (17:15 PST) | Apparently the internet is full of misinformation. The proper date for Frank Black's birthday is 4/6, not 4/4. I originally heard about the date on the forum, did a search online, and it came up as 4/4. To help matters, I changed the date of the news to show 4/6. Sorry for any confusion this may have caused. | | 4/16/2003 | NME Info On New Album | | Alec writes:

| | 4/23/2003 | Buncha Little Updates, Makin' Noise! | | Okay, i've been a somewhat busy boy. Tonite, i did the following:
o fixed the main link to the Pixies Tab
o added a link to the Gigography
o added bio's for Jim and Dean (and welcome aboard Dean, who'll be doing the Bio's, and the FB Compilation!)
And that's it for now..getting late and i need to get up early to walk doggies at the SPCA.. Next will be more tabs (B-Sides and Pixies), updated band bio's, and other stuff..
A super-big THANK YOU to Zan for her awesome work putting together the band bio's (and the insurmountable task of getting Jim's bio!), unfortunately other things in life beckon her, but she'll still be around the Forum.
A few days ago we hit 1000 members on the FB.net Forum, absolutely amazing! We're still getting about six people signing up every day. No idea why it's that number.
Also, we've got 4 more gigs of space on the FB FTP, woohoo!
And tomorrow (today's) show is the last one on this tour... | | 4/30/2003 | FRANK BLACK TRIBUTE 'ALBUM' | | NOTE: Do not contact Dave about this, your message will be DELETED!!! All the necessary info is below. Read it.
Dean (Cult_Of_Frank) sends us:
We have officially been given the green light by Mr. Frank Black himself as well as Ken Goes, his manager, to compile an MP3 tribute 'album' of Frank Black covers by members of FrankBlack.net. The current roster boasts more than 30 musicians who will be giving the Frank Black songs we know and love their own unique spin (or doing their best to recreate the original). The track list can be seen here.
If you are interested in getting on board this project, please read the details (see above link), make sure that no one else is doing the track you are (if you are dead set on a previously claimed track, I may make exceptions), and post on the forum or send me an email.
Finally, if you are interested but unsure that you can complete the song yourself, check the Collaboration section and post what you're willing to do / contribute / have contributed.
The deadline for signing up is May 1st (though there is a little leeway as this news post was made rather late) and the deadline for submitting the track (no leeway) is July 1st. The 'CD' will be complete with artwork and will be available free to FB.net members in MP3 form on the FTP site.
Look for the completed CD in mid-July! | | 5/14/2003 | FB Guest Appearance in NYC | | Visiting Sasquatch and eugovector both wrote in to say:

Voting closes Friday, June 20. | | 6/25/2003 | frankblack.net Reaches the Airwaves | | During his June 21st interview on BBC 6 Music with Steve Lamacq, Frank Black and Steve briefly talk about frankblack.net and gave mention to the tribute album currently under contruction. Here's a transcript of the chat:
Steve: ...and there's another one, sort of, I don't know...seems semi-official, which is compiling a Frank Black tribute album. Now you know you've really made it--
Frank: --the frankblack.net people, yes. That's run out of--run by a guy from Victoria, British Columbia.
Steve: Really?
Frank: Yeah...nice, nice young man. They've got a...not an officially sanctioned site,
Steve: But--
Frank: I've met a lot of these people, but I don't have any official websites.
Steve: Really no?
Frank: No, I mean...we've got these guys all over the world--
Steve: You've got two and a half million people--
Frank: --I mean you know, they're kinda doing it all for me, I don't even have to think about it. I never really bothered.
He chatted about topics such as the wonder of broadcasting and his upcoming album, answered a few questions sent in by listeners, and played three songs: Goodbye Loraine, The Shrimp Song, and Cactus. You can listen to the interview yourself (Real Player is required. The interview begins around the 2:08 mark).

Frank Black has announced that he will be doing a one-off solo show at The Underworld, Camden, London on Tuesday 8th July. This will be the first time he has played in the UK since 2001. Tickets are £10.00, subject to a booking fee, and are available from the venue’s box office on 020 7482 1932 or online via www.wayahead.com.
Frank Black & The Catholics will be releasing a limited edition CD single, “Everything Is New” (FRYCD161) on 8th August, which is taken from the forthcoming album “Show Me Your Tears” (COOKCD 262), due for release on 8th September. The album, which features guest appearances by Stan Ridgway, Joey Santiago, Van Dyke Parks, Eric Drew Feldman, Rob Laufer, Jack Kidney, and the Pale Boys, is described by Black as “Thirteen big, salty tears. Like thirteen little black dogs just born, still in their sacs, about to wake up, ready to howl at the world. There isn’t a happy song in this bunch.”
Frank Black & The Catholics will be touring the UK later in the year. More details to follow …
| | 7/10/2003 | Pixies Reunion? | | Matt sends us this link from NME where Frank doesn't entirely dismiss the possibility:
"I do dream about the Pixies reunion I do have to say."
He added: "We might. We (bassist Kim Deal, drummer David Lovering and guitarist Joey Santiago) do get together and have private jams together, but not for public consumption."
Discuss it in the Forum where we have an area dedicated the the suddenly rumoriffic Pixies. | | 7/11/2003 | Official Word™ on Pixies Reunion, CVD & FB, and More Tour Dates! | | This just in!!
I have heard from a close and reliable source of our gallant hero, Frank Black, that this is the Official Word™ on the Pixies reunion:
"Finally, as for the latest rumor (#398) that the Pixies are going to reunite for a tour (as mentioned by FB on London's Xfm radio)... here's the lowdown from the inside : The Pixies will get together later this year to record a new double album of Latvian children's lullabies, after which they will tour each and every country whose name begins with the letters Cz."
So there you have it!
In other news, there seems to be at least one person who thinks Frank died of a heart attack a few days ago. This is not true. It was over a month ago now.
Finally, if you look to the right, you will see that Frank and the gang will be rawkin' out in the UK and other trendy Euro locales in the upcoming months, enjoy you lucky blokes and blokettes! | | 7/11/2003 | FB&TC and Pixies Tab Updates! | | Did a ton of updates to the Tab pages, for both FB&TC and the Pixies. Due to circumstances beyond his control, Frank Black must regretfully cancel his upcoming show at the Corner Hotel Thur 21st Aug. Ticket refunds are available at point of purchase. At this stage the Frontier Touring Company and Frank Black hope to reschedule his Australian tour for February 2004 - and this time rumour has it Frank will be bringing The Catholics with him. Please note that tickets for his August tour will not be valid for the 2004 tour. | | 7/30/2003 | More Dates and Official Word for Europe | | Thanks to everyone who has submitted dates for the fall European tour. The list to the right continues to grow as more dates are confirmed. I decided to add a little asterick (*)next to the dates most recently added. SECRET NOTE: The website's birthday is Sept 19th! Expect some more surprises then!! | | 9/10/2003 | Pixies Reunion, BBC Updates & 2000 Forum Members! | | Wow..what a day.. A huge media explosion on a single rumor of the Pixies reforming.
Thanks to the countless (okay, 529) Pixies fans who emailed me these stories. (Apologies to the others who received bounced messages. I really want to see your article!! Like really!)
Being a tasty flan with connections, i contacted my afore-mentioned close and reliable source for the Official Word™, and here's what i was sent on the compelling Rumor 398b:
As you may know, 20th century physicists studying sub-atomic particles discovered that, in determining a particle's position, they could not, simultaneously, determine the particle's direction and velocity. On the other hand, in determining the direction and velocity of a particle, they were also precluded from simultaneously determining the particle's position.
Such is the case with the Pixies; I may know where they are at a particular moment, but I have no idea where they're going. On the other hand, I may know where they're going, but have no idea where they are.
There you have it. However, the plot thickens on Billboard.com where Ken Goes, FB's and the Pixies' manager tells us there's been a request for the Pixies to play! But...also...that there are many such requests each year.
So what doya think? Is there gonna be tour and new Pixies album? The FB community is doing a great job getting to the bottom of this here.
But the news doesn't end there... The BBC shows mentioned below have been updated, best keep an eye on this thread. The new times are:
The Pixies Live at Glastonbury '89
Tuesday 23 September at 23:00GMT
repeated Sunday 28 September at 07:00GMT
Frank Black Evening Session
Monday 22 September at 22:00GMT
repeated Saturday 28 September at 07:00GMT
The shows are archived online for one week following broadcast.
If that isn't enough excitement, the FB Forum now has over 2000 members! Thanks to all these fine people for creating what i believe is the best online community of any former Pixie. Eat your hearts out Breeders fans!!! =) | | 9/19/2003 | Happy Birthday FB.net, plus the Pixies Tribute CD | | The clock doesn't stop for Frank Black, nor the website we've thrown together for him! We've been online for one year, and thanks to all our visitors, this site has really come together!
Amazingly, over 2100 people have signed up to the Forum, which was the initial purpose of this project. Many new friendships have been formed, knowledge passed on, and silly images keep popping up as well. Hurray for the interweb!
A big thanks goes out to a few people who have worked especially hard to make this site happen:
* Jim McLuckie / El Barto, whose fingers have been in practically every aspect of the site. Thanks Jim!! (watch out for the Song Database (it really is almost ready!!) and Articles/Interviews/In Print section coming up!)
* Derek Olson / ProverbialCereal, whose organized our massive FB & Pixies tab sections
* Gavin Bachner / Switchy, who compiles the Gigography, (which Frank Black himself was most impressed with!)
* Dean Katsiris / Cult_of_Frank, whose a relative new-comer to the project, but has done a phenominal job with the Frank Black Tribute CD - You Ain't Me, is now organizing the upcoming Pixies tribute (see below!) as well as taking on the band and web team bios (check out the new bio on Frank Black!)
* the vomitting frog..oh wait..that was Conan O'Brian the other night..never mind.
I've also found a few kind folks who've recently jumped on board and taken up tasks around the site; thanks to Sarah / Mereubu (FB FAQ); Mike / Speedy_M (FB FTP); and Ben / Chroneos and Damien / Active Duck who have been contributing great graphics to the site. (Hope i didn't miss anyone..?)
And of course there's Frank Black, who is the root of our inspiration for all this, and is about to embark on a European tour! Wish i could make it. =)
*phew!*
In other news:
Fresh from his tour of Europe to promote the Frank Black tribute album You Ain't Me, that wily Cult_of_Frank is back at it again. This time around, it's a Pixies tribute CD. If you missed the Frank Black tribute, this is your chance to get aboard. Signup begins today and ends Sept. 30 at this thread in the Forum.
Looking forward to hearing those Pixies tunes!
Secret News: Doesn't look like anyone noticed the previous Secret News item... | | 12/8/2003 | FB SongDB and Exclusive iTunes FB 'Single', Pixies Tribute CD Info | | Hey everyone! Long time no news!
First, thanks to the hard work of Jim (aka El Barto) we've got the BETA version of the Frank Black Song Database online for your viewing pleasure! This is in it's initial stages, and there will be lot's more added soon!
Also, Sarah Flynn from spinART Records sent me a note today, and they're excited (and me too!) to announce that there is an exclusive new Frank Black and the Catholics bonus EP available at iTunes! Check out these four new songs:
- 01. Don't Clip Your Wings
- 02. A Dab'll Do Ya
- 03. Preacher's Daughter
- 04. Show Me Your Tears
Finally! Some more FB tunes!
(Note that you need to install iTunes software on your computer to play the 30 second sample clips, and/or buy these songs.)
Additionally: These songs were recorded in the same sessions as Show Me Your Tears.
Additional additionally: Currently, only US residents can purchase songs from iTunes, tho people anywhere can download the approx. 20MB software and listen to 30second clips of each songs. Also, for some reason the songs say they're from 'Rounder Records' which is some sort of clerical error, spinART will have that fixed soon i'm sure!
Soon there will be even more music for the masses.. Here's a quick note to mention that the FB.net Pixies Tribute CD, as organized by Dean (aka Cult_Of_Frank) is in the final stages!
We have voted, and decided to call it 'Hey - A Pixies Tribute'. Here is a link to the cover art. There have been 44 tracks submitted for this, which Dean will be forced to split into an 'A-Sides' and 'B-Sides' 'CD'. They will soon be mastered by our audio-engineer Tim “Atheist4Catholics” Franklin, and then popped onto our FTP site for everyone to enjoy -- click here for all the details!
More exciting news real soon...i promise. =)
- Dave
Still no one has mentioned my secret news items...hmmm..well,
the first person to send me a note through my contact page with the line 'I
LOVE YOU DAVE NOISY!' will get a free Cult of Ray sticker mailed to them. =)
| | 12/10/2003 | News on the Pixies DVD, and a New 'Best Of' | | Dave Horror sends us the following news from XFM:
New CD And DVD for The Pixies
After a year that saw rumours of their possible reformation reach hysterical proportion, The Pixies have announced that they will be releasing a new ‘Best Of’ CD and DVD featuring a documentary and live footage of the band from 1988.
Firstly the band will be releasing a new greatest hits package to replace 1997's ‘Death To The Pixies’ compilation on 4AD Records.
There will also be what Pixies manager Ken Goes describes as "A very nice DVD". The set will feature eight Pixies videos, including the promos for ‘Debaser’, ‘Here Comes Your Man’ and ‘Monkey Gone to Heaven’ as well as a documentary which was made for the BBC a few years ago.
Entitled ‘Gouge’ it includes interviews with Radiohead's Thom Yorke, David Bowie and Bono, plus a live recording of the band’s legendary 1988 concert at the Town & Country Club in London.
"Finally, it'll include some off-stage stuff, sort of behind-the-scenes, on tour and in the studio; about 30 minutes or so," Goes explained to Billboard, "It'll be a great package for fans and a nice introduction for others."
Since Xfm exclusively broke the news that Pixies frontman Frank Black had been considering reforming the band (who split in 1992) there have been rumours that they would undertake a world tour, but Goes had no comment. Speaking to Billboard he said he had "Received an offer for the Pixies to perform in April. That said, over the past 10 years, I have received dozens of offers for the Pixies."
Well - you heard it here..errr...second!

Secret Message | | 12/25/2003 | Friends Club - Draw Results Are In! | | Hey everyone! Our first three Friends of FrankBlack.net Club Lifetime Members are "Cookie", Yann Mege, and Diana Richard and as such will receive a copy of the Nadine single.
The five lucky winners of the draw are "Snoop_Haiku", "BrendanT", "Gauth17", "ColdHeartofStone" and Chris Keenan, and they have also won copies of the CD Single.
So far almost 60 people have joined the Club, and thanks to them we've raised over $525!! Way to go!
