"If I was gonna take it seriously, the first thing I’d do is go to fat camp, get an image makeover, a producer, start listening to what’s on the radio. Some people enjoy that and find themselves most creative there. I’m sure they thrive on that icky atmosphere, but I’m not gonna bother."
(Frank Black on the music industry - Interview with Geocites)

Server Migrated
Cult of Frank (16:42 PST)

Hi all! After far too long languishing on an old server run by a hamster wheel, we've retired the hamster and bought a bigger wheel. As far as we can tell, things are working that haven't worked in years and we're hoping to track down bugs and make some updates - hopefully with some help!

If you're interested in helping us update content, please drop us a line on the forum of via my contact page. Thanks!

Asia Dates Postponed
Cult of Frank (20:05 PST)

Pixies has announced that their Japan dates have been postponed. They were scheduled to play Kangawa, Tokyo, and Osaka Feb 24-26 respectively. In addition, though not formally announced, three dates in China also no longer appear on their tour schedule. They had been scheduled to appear in Shanghai Feb 29, Beijing March 1, and Kowloon March 2. So far, their dates in Australia remain scheduled.

No official reason was provided, but there is certainly speculation that the recent outbreak of Corona virus is at least part of the cause. Offically, the dates are postponded and not cancelled outright, so there is still hope for fans that a replacement show may be scheduled.

Bang The Drum
Cult of Frank (22:27 PST)

In the spirit of the Italians singing from their balconies, Frank Black has an idea to share joy and show solidarity in this time of crisis. From the man himself:

"When I was a boy, we used to bang pots and pans outside at midnight on New Year's Eve. I've been inspired seeing those clips of the quarantined Italians singing from their balconies. I propose this action to you today:

No matter your state of health or political views or age or education or philosophy, I ask you to greet the night at 6 PM local time by banging the pot long enough so that I can hear you, but not so long that you disturb our present contemplation.

If you have no pot to play then play two spoons; play your tune on your porch and in your garden and at your window sill. And if you are feeling too ill to come to the window, I hope you will hear us banging for you and you can smile with us!

I'll be listening for you tomorrow night and every night at 6 PM.

On that note, we at FrankBlack.Net wish all of you, your friends, families, and communities, health and a return to a life more filled with community and each other as soon as possible.

Die! Die! Die! Frank Black Collaborates with the Residents
Cult of Frank (02:18 PST)

A new collaboration from Frank Black and The Residents reflects the mood of the day, complete with a video of Covid-19 spiky balls rolling around the screen. But Frank Black told Rolling Stone that the song was recorded pre-COVID in San Francisco.

“It was pretty intense. I almost felt like I wasn’t going to be able to do justice or something. It was so dark, I didn’t know whether or not I was going to be able to pull it off. So after I got over that first hump of shyness or whatever, I was able to kind of get into the murdering kind of frantic mode. You know, it’s been a while since I’ve recorded something so frantic and angry-sounding.”

The Residents claim that the song was originally written by a long lost bluesman named Alvin Snow in the mid-Seventies. There is some question whether Snow actually exists. In the same Rolling Stone article, they wondered who could inspire such animosity. “Then, without warning, the world was quickly captivated and consumed by the COVID-19 health crisis. And as the pandemic grew, eagerly enveloping an entire civilization both physically and emotionally, one voice stood out from the cacophony generated by a world gravely stricken with suffering and pain. And for the Residents, something about that voice was familiar… not the actual voice itself but its tone… larger than life, sneering and utterly empty of empathy, love and compassion. And in that moment, almost 50 years of reflection back to the Seventies was complete. ‘Die! Die! Die!’ became ‘Now! Now! Now!’ A perfect parallel with its all too eager protagonist snidely and indifferently turning his back on a world whose approval he so desperately sought.”
