Definitions and References: Snake Oil Snake oil refers originally to a type of 19th century medicine often sold by 'travelling doctors' as a miracle cure, claiming to contain snake fat which was supposed to be a Native American remedy to a number of ills. Most so called snake oils did not contain any snake fat at all. The term nowadays is indicative of fake and ineffective potions, and of products with exaggerated marketing but unverifiable quality .
